Over 2,200 athletic performers took part in the opening ceremony of the 5th sports meet of Hainan province held in Sanya on Aug 8.
That day was the 10th National Fitness Day, so the event fully displayed Hainan's development in culture and competitive sports over the past 30 years.
The comprehensive provincial-level meet has the largest scale, longest duration and highest competitiveness in the province and has gained extensive attention this year as it has been absent for the last six.
Altogether 288 competitive events in 15 categories are being held in Sanya, Haikou, Wenchang, Chengmai and Wanning from July 5 to Aug 18, and a further 48 events for the general public will end by Oct 14.
