Sanya is located in the south of Hainan Island, east of Lingshui County, west of Ledong County, and north of Baoting County.

The only beachfront tropical city in China, Sanya boasts a 258 kilometer long coastline. It has 19 bays and beaches, and enjoys over 20 meters of water visibility.

Due to its tropical marine monsoon climate, with an annual average temperature of 25.4 C and a forest coverage rate of 68 percent, the urban air quality is always optimal. Sanya's tropical forests are all well worth discovering. Five forest parks, including Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park, Phoenix Park and Linchun Park, make the city more like a nature reserve with an excellent ecological environment and air quality.

Unique climate and landscapes have made Sanya "China's Hawaii".

Sanya offers visitors a fantastic mix of beautiful beaches, tropical rainforests, and mountainous regions, and is a popular vacation destination. While Sanya draws tourists with its beaches, other attractions such as trails for hiking and biking, nature reserves and cultural parks mean that Hainan's tourism scene has a respectable amount of diversity.

Sanya boasts an abundance of scenic spots steeped in thousands of years of history, including the 108-meter statue of Guanyin in Nanshan Temple, Tianyahaijiao (the End of the Earth), Daxiaodongtian (Dongtian Park), Luhuitou Park, and Wuzhizhou Island.

It is also a place to enjoy golfing as it has more than 10 quality courses, and others are under construction or currently being planned.

Meanwhile, Sanya is one of the few places in China where the Li ethnic group have settled. Over the past thousand years, this ethnic group created architecture, music and dancing, garments and brocades. The facial tattoos of the Li people have been highly praised as a "living fossil of body art". The Miao and Hui people are other ethnic groups living in Sanya, and their distinctive cultures and customs attract many visitors annually.

The city has won the titles of "National Ecological Demonstration Zone", "National Garden City", "National Health City", and "China Habitat Environment Award".
