On Dec 28, five transportation projects were announced as completed and opened to traffic, with a total construction mileage of 298 kilometers and a total investment of 20 billion yuan ($2.87 billion). Meanwhile, start of construction on another five projects with a total investment of 9.66 billion yuan was also announced.

So far, the total mileage of Hainan's expressway has reached 1,397 km, an important step in accelerating the construction of a transportation network suitable for the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port.

Despite the influence of the pandemic, continuous heavy rainfall and other factors, the Haikou section of the G15 Shenyang-Haikou Expressway was completed six months ahead of schedule. The total length of the project is only 13.7 km, but it is an important part of the G15 Shenyang-Haikou Expressway and G75 Lanzhou-Haikou Expressway, which is of great significance.

In addition, the other four completed transportation projects have improved the road service level of Hainan and the regional traffic and investment environment, and will greatly promote the economic and social development of affected regions.

From January to November this year, the province's fixed assets investment in roads and waterways was 17.15 billion yuan, up 14.5 percent year on year. It is estimated that 20 billion yuan will be allocated over the entire year.

One of the five new projects, the tourism highway project of the tropical rainforest national park, passes through the nine cities and counties of Lingshui, Baoting, Sanya, Ledong, Dongfang, Changjiang, Baisha, Danzhou and Qiongzhong, in a clockwise direction. The total length of the route is 466 km, and its investment amounts to 6 billion yuan. It is planned to be completed and opened to traffic in June 2025.

"The project is an important part of the transportation system of tropical rainforest national parks, and an important infrastructure project to implement national strategies such as national parks, ecological civilization pilot areas, and rural vitalization," said Liu Chuang, an official of the Hainan Provincial Department of Transportation.
