Hainan has arranged for over 100,000 stranded tourists to return home from epidemic-stricken areas in the province from Aug 9.

As of 12:00 pm on Aug 18, Haikou Meilan International Airport transported nearly 70,000 passengers, while 7,444 passengers left Haikou through its port terminal. As of 15:00 pm on Aug 18, a total of 31,698 stranded passengers in Sanya had returned by plane.

The recent COVID-19 outbreak has stranded about 150,000 tourists on the island, due to it occurring at the height of the summer tourism season.

As of Aug 17, Sanya had 10,492 confirmed and asymptomatic COVID-19 cases, including 4,393 confirmed cases and 6,099 symptomatic carriers.

Hainan had 5,794 confirmed cases and 7,969 asymptomatic carriers from Aug 1 to 17.

The island saw a rise of COVID-19 infections on Aug 16, mainly concentrated in a few areas where the outbreak is still expanding. The prevention and control situation remains severe and complex in Sanya, Ledong, Danzhou, Wanning, Dongfang, and Lingao, which saw significant increases in infections over the confirmed figure registered on Aug 15, Chen Shaoshi, deputy director of the Hainan Health Commission, said at a news conference in Haikou on Aug 18.

To date, 20,078 medical staff members from 20 provinces across the country have come to Hainan province to offer their support, carrying out various tasks and contributing their valuable anti-pandemic experience across the island.
