On May 11, China's first domestically produced subsea Xmas tree completed installation on the seabed in the Yinggehai Sea area of Hainan, signifying that China has the independent ability to design, construct, and apply complete sets of underwater oil and gas extraction equipment.

The Xmas tree is an engineering demonstration application project of the 500-meter underwater oil and gas production system implemented by China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC). It will be used to extract gas reservoirs around the Ledong platform of the Dongfang 1-1 gas field. A single gas well can produce about 200 million cubic meters of natural gas per year.

In the future, CNOOC will continue to strengthen original and leading scientific and technological research, develop offshore oil and gas resources with equipment with independent property rights, as well as strive to make contributions to ensuring national energy security, according to Xie Yuhong, chief scientist of CNOOC and manager of the project.
