Eighty dancers, including three Hainan natives, performed at the closing ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics on Feb 20, which was critically renowned and expressed Chinese people's hospitality in bidding farewell to guests from around the world after the 16-day event.
The three dancers from Hainan, Wang Hui, Chen Qia, and Wang Niannian, are all students from the Dance department of Capital Normal University.
Wang Niannian said that she was fortunate to participate in the closing ceremony while she was a freshman, adding that all her relatives and friends were proud of her.
Wang Hui admitted that she first felt tired at the start of her daily training. She added that in order to form a circle to create the appearance of a big tree with a combination of lights in just a few seconds, they had to practice the routine repeatedly on the cold training ground every day.
"Expressing emotions through body language is a big challenge," said Chen. "The emotion of the performance changes at different levels. It conveys the sadness of farewells at the beginning, and finally changes to being full of hope."
To help the dancers convey the appropriate emotion exactly, the closing ceremony's directors explained the emotional core of each part to them in detail.
To prepare for the performance, the three Hainan natives didn't go home for the Spring Festival. However, they said that they have benefited greatly from the experience. Chen admitted that she was deeply moved by the innovation and emotional expression of the performance. Wang Hui, who has more performance experience, said that this has strengthened her desire to pursue dance after graduation, as she was deeply impressed by the dance teachers' professional attitude and sense of mission.
