The Hainan Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology announced on Feb 16 that Hainan province added 9,273 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in January, a year-on-year increase of 571 percent. As of the end of January, the number of NEVs in Hainan exceeded 130,000, nearly doubling the total from the same period last year.

The promotion of NEVs in Hainan province has achieved remarkable results. In 2021, 58,700 NEVs were sold, accounting for 25.8 percent of the province's added vehicles, 13.1 percentage points higher than the national average. The growth rate of NEV ownership was 91 percent, ranking first in the country.

This year, Hainan will take effective measures to accelerate the promotion and market consumption of NEVs. First, the 2022 action plan for the promotion of NEVs will be issued to reach the goal of "NEVs accounting for more than 30 percent of new vehicles" that was proposed in the Hainan Provincial Government Work Report. Second, the 2021 comprehensive incentive funds for promoting NEV consumption to consumers will be allocated before the end of March. Third, the 2022 NEV award and subsidy policy to stabilize market expectations will be introduced. Fourth, the 2022 NEV promotion activities to promote consumption upgrades in rural areas will continue to be carried out.
