Deep Sea No 1, a 100,000 metric ton deep-water semi-submersible oil production and storage facility, has produced over 1 billion cubic meter of natural gas since it started operation on June 25, 2021, China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC) said on Feb 13.

Yuan Yuan, director of the Deep Sea No 1 energy station, said that the gas field has reached a production capacity of 1 billion cu m, reflecting that China has ranked among the top countries in deep-sea oil and gas exploration.

The energy station, located in the waters off of Hainan province, was developed and built by CNOOC and is expected to provide 3 billion cu m of natural gas every year to meet one quarter of the people's gas demand in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The Deep Sea No 1 large gas field is an offshore deepwater gas field with the deepest average water depth and the most difficult exploration that China has independently discovered so far.

Yuan introduced that the construction scale and complex process of the energy station are at the forefront of the same type of offshore oil and gas processing facilities in the world.

At present, with the foundation of the Deep Sea No 1, CNOOC is actively promoting the launch of other gas fields such as Deep Sea No 2, in order to better to meet the growing demand for clean energy in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Hainan Free Trade Port.
