Qu Junmeng, a ceramist living in Hainan, created a set of ceramic micro-sculptures inspired by winter sports to celebrate the opening of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

He shaped 19 athletes to show 11 different Winter Olympic sports such as alpine skiing, ski jumping, short track speed skating, figure skating, curling, and snowmobile.

Qu is the inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of ceramic micro-sculptures. He is good at creating various ceramic micro-sculpture works, such as figurines, animals, and landscape sand tables. His works have won numerous awards in national and provincial ceramic art exhibitions.

The ceramic micro-sculptures are made of bone porcelain clay that can withstand high temperatures of more than 1300 degrees. The ceramics fired from this clay are lustrous but have poor plasticity. They are easy to crack during kneading, requiring high speed and control ability.

The making technique of the ceramic micro-sculpture works is also very difficult. Without using any tools, Qu shapes the clay into a five-centimeter-sized miniature ceramic figurine only by hand.
