The list of China's Top 100 Health Tourism Cities was recently released during the main forum of the 2021 China Culture and Tourism Summit. Haikou, capital of Hainan province, topped the list, while Sanya ranked third.

Hainan is China's only tropical province, as well as a rare island health resort and well-known "world longevity island" and "health island".

Haikou is a southern coastal city rich in beautiful scenery and home to a strong health tourism industry. It is known to be a natural oxygen bar, and was among the world's first group of "International Wetland Cities" selected by the International Convention on Wetlands of the United Nations Organization in 2018.

Sanya possesses a unique natural environment and is an ideal place for the development of health tourism. It is famous for its hot springs and spas, and tourists can also experience international advanced medical technology as well as Hainan traditional Chinese medicine physiotherapy here.

The list is based on the latest research results of Professor Ma Yong, dean of the Tourism Development Research Institute of Hubei University. The research constructed a comprehensive evaluation index for health tourism cities, focusing on four aspects: health tourism ecological environment, medical health environment, economic development environment, and health tourism development environment.
