Haikou Meilan International Airport built a new terminal and runway as the second phase extension, both of which were put into operation on Dec 2, opening a new chapter in the high-quality construction of the air portal of Hainan free trade port.

The second phase is located in the north of the existing airport and has a planned land area of about 8,644 mu (576 hectares). It has a runway with a length of 3,600 meters and a width of 60 meters as well as two parallel taxiways, making it able to accommodate the world's largest model of civil aviation airliner - A380.

The newly-built terminal covers an area of 300,000 square meters and has a total of five check-in islands, 110 check-in counters, 40 security check channels, 57 boarding gates, and a 10,000 sq-m duty-free business area.

According to the operation plan, some flights operated by Hainan Airlines and China Southern Airlines will transfer to Terminal 2 starting Dec 2, while other airlines will continue to operate in Terminal 1.

The second phase of Haikou Meilan International Airport is an important step in building a transportation system in Hainan that combines sea, land and air transport and strengthens interconnection with countries along the "Belt and Road". It is of great importance for the development of tourism and airport logistics in Hainan.
