The Maiwan Water Conservancy Project started construction in April 2020 with a total investment of 7.36 billion yuan ($1.16 million) and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024. After completion, it will be able to guarantee the security of the water supply in Haikou Jiangdong New Area, and raise the flood control standard in Haikou from "once in 50 years" to "once a century."

The Tianjiaotan Water Conservancy Project started construction in April 2020 with a total investment of 4.34 billion yuan and is planned to be completed by the end of 2023. After completion, it will improve the water security capacity of Hainan's Danzhou city and Baisha Li autonomous county.

Chen Dejiao, an official of the Hainan Provincial Department of Water Affairs, said that both projects are important infrastructure projects in the water network construction plan of Hainan Free Trade Port, and are among the 150 major water conservancy projects included in the national 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25). They will play an important role in the economic development and social stability of Haikou, Danzhou, Yangpu and the province as a whole.
