Hainan's gibbon conservation experience was shared at the Ecological Civilization Forum at the ongoing 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) on Thursday in Kunming, capital of Southwest China's Yunnan Province.

The forum focuses on severe challenges facing the global ecological environment, and shares valuable experience from global ecological environment governance.

Zhang Xinsheng, president and chairman of the Council of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), described the background, methods and model as well as the cultural and scientific significance of Hainan gibbon conservation.

He pointed out that the construction of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park has protected the original habitat of the Hainan gibbons, and a systematic protection mechanism has been set up. In this context, international and domestic experts have participated in helping Hainan gibbons recover from the brink of extinction and the remaining number of gibbons currently stands at 35.

"The world is currently facing two of its biggest crises - global warming and loss of biodiversity. The best way to solve the loss of biodiversity is through Nature-based Solutions (NBS). Zhang believes that the Hainan gibbon has had no artificial intervention in its reproduction during the restoration process, which is rare around the world, and is a typical practical case of NBS.

Zhang called for people working together to protect the gibbons, and protect the earth's biodiversity.
