South China's Hainan province began administering COVID-19 booster shots on Oct 4.

The booster shots are now open to people who are older than 18 and have received two doses of an inactivated COVID-19 vaccine or the CanSino vaccine at least six months ago.

Priority is given to key groups of people with high infection risks including front-line personnel at medical institutions or border ports, and those who want to work or study abroad.

The booster shots have a sound neutralization effect on the variant strains such as Delta and can offer added protection against the virus. After 14 days from receiving the booster shots, the antibody level will be 10 to 30 times that of the original.
