Hainan and South Korea's Jeju conducted an online traditional textile techniques exchange on Sept 15. Chen Dan, an inheritor of Li brocade, showed the traditional spinning, dyeing, weaving and embroidering techniques of the Li ethnic group; while Doctor Shin Hye-sun, a professor at Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea, explained Jeju natural dyeing cloth techniques at the event.

The exchange was co-sponsored by the Foreign Affairs Office of Hainan Province, South Korea's Jeju Provincial Cultural and Sports Foreign Cooperation Bureau, and the Hainan Provincial Department of Tourism and Culture.

The Li brocade in Hainan has a history of more than 3,000 years and is known as the "living fossil" in Chinese textiles industry. The traditional spinning, dyeing, weaving and embroidery techniques of the Li ethnic group were included in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Representative List in 2006, and the techniques were included in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding by UNESCO in October 2009.

Meanwhile, Jeju's traditional costumes and naturally dyed fabrics techniques also have a long history and are an important cultural heritage.

Attendees said that in recent years, Hainan and Jeju have increased exchanges and cooperation, and the friendly relations between the two places have continued to deepen. They hope that this online meeting will further promote the traditional culture exchange between each other.
