The 2021 China Hainan Island Fishing Grand Prix kicked off on Aug 1 and is scheduled to last until November, according to a press conference held in Haikou.

As the only tropical island province in China, Hainan has a unique natural environment and abundant sea fishing resources, according to Liu An, head of the Hainan Tourism and Leisure Fishing Association.

With its rich and diverse fishing resources, and a spring-like climate all year round, Hainan provides the best conditions for the development of the marine fishing industry, Liu added.

According to the 2021-25 development plan for its tourism, culture, radio, television and sports industries, Hainan plans to create five key tourism products that integrate tourism with shopping, healthcare, fishery, culture, and sports.

The island province also plans to host international sea fishing competitions and fishing festivals in Haikou, Sanya, Wanning as well as other cities and counties, create a number of characteristic sea fishing towns, and restore outdated fishing spots with distinctive features. It also strives to build a long-term mechanism for the healthy development of the fishing industry.

The 2021 China Hainan Island Fishing Grand Prix will have six main venues in Haikou, Sanya, Qionghai, Wanning, Danzhou and Chengmai, with each venue having 30 teams competing against each other in areas of boat fishing, beach fishing and reef fishing. A total of 420,000 yuan ($65,000) will be awarded to the winners.
