Hainan Free Trade Port to serve as new growth engine

Timeline

April 13, 2018: A plan is unveiled to support building Hainan Island into a pilot free trade zone and gradually into a free trade port with Chinese characteristics.

April 14, 2018: Guidance is issued by the central government to support Hainan's efforts to deepen reform and opening-up.

May 1, 2018: Hainan offers visa-free access to tourists from 59 countries.

Oct 16, 2018: The China (Hainan) Free Trade Zone General Plan is officially released.

Jan 1, 2019: A free trade account system is officially put into service in the Hainan Pilot Free Trade Zone.

Feb 23, 2019: Hainan launches a 3 billion yuan ($421.77 million) fund for free trade zone construction.

June 1, 2020: China releases the General Plan for the Hainan Free Trade Port.

June 3, 2020: Eleven key industrial parks are unveiled to support the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port.
