The city of Wenchang in Hainan province launched a pilot "garbage bank" on April 28 to encourage visitors to actively participate in garbage disposal, as well as to keep the coastline clean and tidy.
The "garbage bank" refers to a place where different categories of trash are collected and properly discarded by visitors who will be then offered a special "deposit" through which they will be rewarded special gifts for their environmental-friendly efforts.
A point system was established in which visitors will be given mineral water, coconuts, and local snacks based on their garbage disposal efforts. For instance, visitors with 60 points can receive a free coconut.
