Hainan should further improve its internationalization level, build a number of world-known festival and event brands, as well as attract more global talents, according to Ken Chu, president of Chinese leisure industry leader Mission Hills Group and deputy to the 6th Hainan Provincial People's Congress, during an interview on Jan 16.

The third session of the 7th Hainan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the third session of the 6th Hainan Provincial People's Congress opened in Haikou, the provincial capital city, on Jan 15 and 16 respectively.

In recent years, the number of festivals in Hainan has been increasing, spanning cycling competitions, marathon races, and the Hainan Island Carnival, Chu said, noting that Hainan's reputation and population has continuously improved through these events.

A truly international event should meet three requirements: international participation, world media coverage, and global audience, said Chu.

Hainan should raise the international level of events by meeting international standards. It should also rely on local customs and cultural resources to make world-class events with Hainan characteristics, Chu added.

Chu also highlighted that the construction of the Hainan Pilot Free Trade Zone and Pilot Free Trade Port is inextricable from talent support.

Overseas students are a talent group that cannot be ignored, he added, suggesting that Hainan needs to make big, new, and surprising moves in the introduction of talents to make it an attractive place for international talents.
