As of the end of 2019, a total of 69 air routes are operated in Qionghai Boao Airport, linking the Hainan coastal town, renowned as the permanent venue of the Boao Forum for Asia, with 64 cities in China.
Since it began operations on Jan 6, 2017, the airport's operational indicators like route number and passenger throughput have far exceeded the level of similar airports in China. In 2019, the airport saw a passenger throughput of 559,000, more than 4,300 takeoffs and landings of airplanes, as well as a mail cargo throughput of 4,800 tons.
Cai Jing, chairman of the airport, expressed his hope that they will expand more routes, open international routes in the future, as well as operate regular flights to first-tier cities like Beijing and Shanghai.
Qionghai is enhancing efforts to receive approval for opening an international terminal at the airport and that significant progress has been made in the government reviews.
After the opening of international flights, the airport will be an international bridge linking Qionghai to the world, bolstering Qionghai's aviation, tourism, and medical industries, as well as effectively promoting the economic development and opening up of Qionghai. In addition, it will serve a role in boosting the economic construction of the Hainan Pilot Free Trade Zone.
