As the construction of the Hainan Pilot Free Trade Zone (Port) accelerates, the number of tourists entering and leaving Hainan province continued to surge in 2019, with total cross-border visits hitting 2.84 million, up 22 percent year-on-year.

Among them, 1.49 million passengers arrived at - or departed from - Haikou Meilan International Airport, while Sanya Phoenix International Airport inspected and released 1.27 million passengers. The province saw the departure and arrival of 19,000 flights and 23,000 ships and the number of tourists from 59 visa-free countries exceeded 470,000, an increase of 33 percent over 2018.
On Jan 1, New Year's Day, Hainan saw a peak of entry and exit visits. On that single day, Haikou's inbound and outbound tourists stood at 8,100, a year-on-year increase of 29 percent, according to the Haikou general station of immigration inspection.
