More than 60 guests from China and ASEAN countries gathered in the tropical city of Sanya, Hainan province on Dec 12 for the Third Forum for ASEAN-China Private Higher Education Development and Cooperation to discuss new practices and blueprints of transnational cooperation in private higher education.

The forum, held at the University of Sanya, is a key move by the school to establish an international exchange platform for higher education in response to the Belt and Road Initiative. Apart from continuous support from the ASEAN-China Center and  China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week (CAECW), this year's forum also saw the participation of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Secretary-General Vladimir Norov.

The First Annual Meeting of the ASEAN-China Alliance of Private Higher Education Institutions (ACAPEHI) was simultaneously hosted at the university.

Successful experiences and practices of the development of private universities were shared at the forum and the meeting, while key cooperation projects were highlighted and innovation blueprints were drawn to further improve the construction and operation of the ACAPEHI.

"Human civilization begins with exchanges. The more frequent and deeper the exchanges are conducted, the higher level human civilization will reach, and education plays a significant role," said Lu Dan, vice president of the China Association for Non-Government Education and president of the University of Sanya, as he addressed guests and extended a welcome to them.

Lu said that he believed that in the future, the special policies given to Hainan by the Chinese government will provide more opportunities for ACAPEHI, enabling them to share university experience, reciprocal platforms, and educational products, as well as realize the ideals of higher education and future university education.

Norov congratulated the successful forum on behalf of SCO, hoping that it could help explore and promote the establishment of an open platform where universities from SCO countries can also have the opportunity to participate in the exchanges and cooperation between China and ASEAN private universities and educational institutions to explore more fruitful and practical cooperation.

During the forum and meeting, the presidents and representatives of universities and educational institutions from countries like Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand took part in lively discussions on the new opportunities and challenges faced by China-ASEAN private higher education.
