A total of 10 awards for on and off screen accomplishments were unveiled at the closing ceremony for the Second Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF), which concluded on Dec 8 in the Chinese tropical city Sanya after eight days of heated competition.

Winners won the newly added Golden Coconut Awards, hosted by China Media Group, with entries competing in the three categories of feature films, documentary films, and short films.

The Best Director award went to young Chinese director Wang Lina for her work A First Farewell, and the Best Picture award was granted to the movie Balloon starring Sonam Wangmo.

Colombian film The Size of Things was announced the winner for the Best Short Film award, while Indian documentary About Love won the Best Documentary award.

The Golden Coconut Awards are designed to promote exchanges among international film studios, forge bonds between filmmakers and film scenes around the world, as well as build a platform linking filmmakers, the film industry, and movie audiences. The second HIIFF marked the first year for the awards.

French actress Isabelle Huppert, president of the Golden Coconut Awards jury, addressed the awarding ceremony and said that cinema is her family, and although people are from different countries and have varied cultures, they share the same love and dedication towards films.

This year's awards received 1,495 films from 80 countries and regions. The film festival set up eight major screening venues to screen more than 200 movies from 61 countries and regions.
