Xu Minggang, a professor at Hainan University and head of the South Subtropical Crop Research Institute of the China Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, was granted the Glinka World Soil Prize on Dec 5, World Soil Day, in Rome, for his outstanding contributions to sustainable soil management and the protection of soil resources.
The Glinka World Soil Prize is an annual award for dynamic change-makers dedicated to solving one of the world’s most pressing environmental issues, soil degradation. The prize is recognized as the Nobel Prize in the soil research field.
Professor Xu's long-term research in fertilization has yielded significant contributions to soil protection and sustainable use. He has also made significant contributions to the sustainable development of crop production systems, technology transfers, and the spreading of scientific knowledge in the red soil region, according to the official from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations who presented Xu the award.
In addition, Professor Xu has also been actively involved in intense teaching and graduate guidance at schools, added the official, saying that he was glad that Xu was selected as a laureate.
