Landmarks bear witness to Hainan's tremendous change

Hainan's tourism industry has seen tremendous changes since the island province became a special economic region 31 years ago. The landmark buildings in the province have been witnesses to the development of the industry.

At the beginning of the founding of the People's Republic of China, there were no hotels in Hainan. The Haikou Overseas Chinese Building built in the 1960s was the first of its kind in Hainan to serve overseas Chinese and foreigners. By 1987, the year before Hainan became a province, there were only 10 tourism attractions and 31 hotels on the whole island.

It was in 1996 when Gloria Resort, China's first five-start resort hotel, opened in Yalong Bay of Sanya that the province's tourism industry ushered in a stage of steady growth.

In April 2018, Atlantis Sanya, a landmark one-stop resort complex, opened in Haitang Bay, providing larger-than-life exotic and marine exhibits, as well as rich dining experiences.

Relying on its unique natural ecological advantages, the province of Hainan continues to improve its appeal as a tourism province.
