The city of Wuzhishan in Hainan province is planning to offer 10 tons of free running water for each rural resident in the city every year, according to an implementation plan on Wuzhishan's drinking water network extension recently released by the municipal government.

The subsidy will be offered for three years and aims to help local rural residents get access to running water.

Wuzhishan is a poverty-stricken city in central Hainan. The drinking water safety project is of great importance to the city, with officials eager to press ahead on its progress. City officials have made several inspections to find solutions for difficulties faced by the project. A special work unit has been formed and surveys have been carried out in seven townships in the city's rural area.

Starting this year, Wuzhishan carries out its running water network extension project in three phases, with the whole project scheduled to be completed by 2020. More than 33,000 rural residents, which accounts for over 73 percent of the city's total rural population, are expected to benefit from the project. The first phase project will be finished by November of this year.
