The 2019 Metropolis Optimist Team Race & Monaco Optimist Team Race China Qualification was held in Sanya on Aug 17 and 50 sailors from cities of Xiamen, Shenzhen, and Sanya battled it out for six admission spots in the Monaco race.
Optimist Sailing, often shorted for OP Sailing, is a race designed for teenagers who use small sailboats. It is the second time that the Monaco Optimist Team Race China Qualification has been held in Sanya. The previous event saw 70 sailors' participation and six of them made it to Monaco in January 2019.
According to Hainan Visun Marine Tourism Co Ltd, the event's organizer, the scale of this year's race had expanded. From May to August, promotion fairs were held in Xiamen, Shenzhen, Suzhou, and Sanya with nearly 200 teenagers participating in the selection process, with the top 12 winners in each city selected for the finals in Sanya.
The world's sailing industry is developing rapidly, and the promotion of sailing should start from young people, said a person-in-charge at Hainan Visun Marine Tourism Co Ltd. Since its inception, the company has been committed to the promotion of sailing culture. It has successively developed products such as the "Half-Day Parent-Child Sailing Camp", the one-day "OP Sailing Research Camp", as well as the five-day and four-night thematic sailing camp, which have won great acclaim among participants.
