The city of Qionghai in South China's Hainan province kicked off its 2019 Tanmen Beachcombing Festival on Aug 17.

The seven-day event features a seafood market, a stunt kite show, a beach music festival, fisherman sports games, movie screenings on the beach, as well as fisherman life experience and other marine-related events.

It is the fifth time that the city has hosted the festival, which originated from local residents' scouring for fish, shrimps, and shellfishes in the intertidal zone when the tides subdue after the fifteen day of the month on the lunar Chinese calendar. Nowadays, beachcombing has become a part of life for people in Tanmen town and an important symbol of tourism for the place.

Aug 17 also marked the opening day for fishing in Tanmen town and the local fishermen performed their rituals to pay tribute to the sea for safety and good fortune.

Differing from previous events, the 2019 Tanmen Beachcombing Festival fully integrates the thematic celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Hainan Tourism Consumption Season, and the Hainan Water Sports Season. It functions as an important window for the world to learn more about Tanmen's tourism resources and fishing culture.

The town of Tanmen is a large fishing town in the east of Qionghai, and its central fishing port is a national first-class one.
