The 2019 "Xu Shaofa Cup" International Youth Table Tennis Competition is slated to be hosted in the city of Sanya on Aug 17, with over 500 players from home and abroad to gather in the tourism city to compete and learn.

The event has been hosted three times and participants include players from sports schools, primary and middle schools, youth table tennis clubs from China and overseas.

Held at Sanya Technician College of Hainan, the competition will be divided into male and female groups under the age of 18, consisting of four categories each: group, singles, mixed doubles, and doubles. The oldest team members are 18 years old while the youngest are four years old.

Xu Shaofa was the head coach of the former national table tennis team. He led the team to 12 world championships. During the 46th World Table Tennis Championships in 2001, Xu won the ITTF Merit Award from the International Table Tennis Federation. After retirement, he initiated a large-scale international non-professional youth competition named after him to further promote table tennis, enhance table tennis skills communication in the country and internationally, as well as tap into young table tennis talents.

This "Xu Shaofu Cup" is a high-level, large-scale, influential, and professional sporting event. With table tennis lovers from all over the world gathering together to learn skills and exchange ideas, the event will surely promote the development of the "sports plus tourism" industry in Sanya, according to Han Jianping, deputy head of the city's tourism, culture, radio, television and sports bureau.
