The Malaysia leg of the Hainan Junior Golf Tour 2019 was held in Kuala Lumpur recently, marking the second time the event has been held outside of China.

Golf is popular in Malaysia, where about 200,000 enthusiasts play all year round. In the past, the most preferred destination for Malaysian golfers were Thailand and Indonesia, while now they tend to choose to play in Hainan, according to 30-year golf veteran Huang Baoqiang from the golf committee of Sportexcel Malaysia.

In April, the Hainan Golf Association and Sportexcel Malaysia signed a strategic cooperation agreement after reaching a consensus on the development of junior golf and amateur golf, as well as golf tourism on both sides. The Malaysia leg of the Hainan Junior Golf Tour 2019 was one of the achievements of the agreement.

"The event held in Kuala Lumpur enhances the influence of golf in Hainan, which will attract more golfers to visit Hainan and enjoy the sport in the province," said Mo Zhuangfei, secretary-general of the Hainan Golf Association.

"The event has been a successful one, with 120 golfers from four countries participating in the competition. The Chinese golfers are from seven provinces and cities. During the event, media outlets in Malaysia offered full coverage on the competition, expanding the influence of Hainan golf across Malaysia," said Mo.

"We launched the Hainan Junior Golf Tour not only to improve the quality of the competition and increase its international influence, but also to promote Hainan's abundant golf tourism resources," added Mo.
