Marking the 100th anniversary of the May Fourth Movement, 2019 is also the year that Hainan is pressing ahead with the construction of its Pilot Free Trade Zone and exploring the construction of its Pilot Free Trade Port. The young residents of Hainan have shouldered heavy responsibility in their construction, and several outstanding contributors were awarded the 23rd "China Youth May 4th Medal" this year for their work.

These included technical experts who have consistently committed to their posts, soldiers who bravely charge ahead, and talents who have contributed their wisdom in science, education, healthcare, and culture.

Aiming high

Lin Riyun, head of a cooperative in Ledong Li autonomous county, gave up his job in Guangzhou and started his own business in 2009. By planting Hami melon and other fruits, Lin has led over 100 people in the cooperative rise out of poverty.

Zeng Min, a post-doctorate from Harvard Medical School, works at People's Hospital of Hainan. She was determined to go back to Hainan and devote herself to her hometown's medical cause.

Striving ahead

For 13 years, the girls from Hainan Women's Football Team have interpreted the saying "struggle is the brightest color of the youth" with action. They were recently crowned champions of the 2019 Hainan Qiongzhong International Cup, which boasted over 20 teams from 17 countries and regions taking part in it.

In order to find examples of successful poverty alleviation efforts and enrichment, Qiu Yao, chief producer of a popular program on Hainan TV, went to remote villages across the province, overcoming difficult conditions and trudging miles to do interviews and research.

Carving out a role

Zhou Hao, a technician from the Institute of Deep Sea Science and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has evolved from being a grass-roots fitter in a coal mining equipment factory 20 years ago. He has worked three years in the Mariana Trench, and has maintained a record of zero errors in parts fabrication.

Building Hainan's success and its Pilot Free Trade Zone is not only the pursuit of the award-winners mentioned above. Millions of young Hainan residents are making less heralded contributions every day to fulfill this goal.
