Chengmai county in Hainan recently opened the province's first self-illuminating rural road to traffic, facilitating the safe travel of local residents, while also contributing to the construction of a smart, green, and safe transportation system.
The road is located in Jinjiang township in Chengmai county, extending 20 kilometers from Jinjiang-Yongfa Highway to No 266 County Highway. It is based on a new material and new technology that can illuminate light energy gradually after absorbing natural light energy during the daytime. The use of the technology offers a promising alternative for safety facilities that typically relied on electric lighting, opening up a new path for low-carbon luminescence.

"In the past, it could be too dark to walk on the road. The new road is safer for people to walk on in the evening," said a local resident, who added that there are an increasing number of people travelling to Hainan and the nighttime activities are booming here now.
According to the Department of Transportation of Hainan Province, the island province planned to implement six major transportation projects dedicated to poverty alleviation in three years during the 13th Five Year Plan (2016-2020). The self-luminous road is part of the efforts.
In addition, self-illumination technology is a technical innovation for road safety and a life protection project implemented by the Ministry of Transport. It also meets the requirements of smart transportation, green transportation, and safe transportation development.
