The second submarine power channel of Hainan province connecting with the Chinese mainland was completed and put into operation, announced the China Southern Power Grid Extra-high Voltage Transmission Company on May 30.
It is the second 500 kilovolts, long distance, and large capacity power interconnection network project in China.
According to Huang Xianqiu, deputy manager of the project, the power channel has the capacity to increase the power supply to Hainan by 60 million kilowatts. Along with the first power channel that was put into operation in 2009, the two submarine channels can supply 120 million kilowatts of electricity, amounting to one fourth of Hainan's maximum load in 2018.
Huang said that the power channel will effectively relieve Hainan's current power shortage and also transmit clean electricity in Yunnan province to Hainan, which will offer stronger power support for Hainan's economic and social development, as well as to the free trade zone and free trade port construction.
