The weeklong serial bird-loving activities were held by the wildlife preservation authority of Hainan province in Yanfeng town, Haikou on March 26.

Participants convened at the demonstration water bird habitat in Yanfeng, which used to be fish and shrimp ponds before afforestation. The area contains 686 mu (45.73 hectares) mudflats to accommodate wild water birds such as the best-known egrets in Hainan.

The mangrove forests around the bare flat are expected to hold off seawater to prevent soil erosion and to provide food for water birds. There are about 20,000 of them in Hainan and the nearby nature reserve in Mipu can attract around 50,000 birds in winter.

Volunteers planted saplings at the demonstration site, leaving neat rows of green scenery on the muddy track.

Later, an opening ceremony was held at Yanfeng Middle School, followed by an open class about wildlife habitats.
