An original dance drama, Jinggang, Jinggang, will be staged at the Hainan Opera House in Haikou in January.

Choreographed by Beijing Dance Academy's president, Guo Lei, and performed by the academy's dance troupe, the show focuses on the early history of the People's Liberation Army, especially the rural revolutionary base in Jiangxi province's Jinggang Mountains that Chairman Mao Zedong established in 1927.

The site is considered to be the "birthplace of the Chinese Red Army" — the PLA's predecessor — and the "cradle of the Chinese revolution".

Guo, a Jiangxi native, led the team to visit local revolutionary sites and learn the stories about the Jianggang Mountains. The choreographer also adapted the rhythm of Jiangxi's tea leaf-picking operas, a local folk art form, to reflect the regional style.

The dance drama premiered at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing on Oct 10, 2017, marking the 90th anniversary of the foundation of the PLA.
