Hainan Rice Dumplings are a traditional snack often eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival, which was the first Chinese festival selected by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage.

Phrynium capitatum is often used to wrap glutinous rice, salted egg yolk, barbecued pork, preserved meat, braised chicken wings, red dates, dried peeled shrimps and sometimes even fish.

A conical rice dumpling weighs about 0.5 kilograms, gathering flavor from the phrynium capitatum, glutinous rice, meat and egg.

The most renowned Hainan Rice Dumplings are Ding'an Black Pork Rice Dumplings, Danzhou Luoji Rice Dumplings and Chengmai Ruixi Rice Dumplings. Special types may also use alkaline water, three-color rice and coconut leaves to make the snack.
