The splendor of Hainan ethnic dances, songs, and brocade weaving crafts was promoted at "A Glimpse of Hainan", a cultural event held at Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, on Sept 10.

Forty-three billboards were set up at a conference hall of over 400 square meters to give visitors a rundown of Hainan, and to display its achievements in cultural exchanges and tourism development over the past 30 years.

A total of 74 pictures highlighted Hainan's infrastructure and ecological construction, opening-up, international tourism, and cultural and sports events.

"Embroidery", an original dance performed by the Hainan Provincial Ethic Dance & Dance Troupe, demonstrated the Miao ethnic embroidery culture. It was well received by the audience, as were songs played with traditional Li ethnic bamboo and wooden instruments.

Dressed in Li ethnic costumes, Fu Renling, and Fu Renjian, two Hainan natives, demonstrated the traditional Li textile techniques including spinning, dyeing, weaving and embroidering, which charmed the attending Finns. The craft has been listed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding by UNESCO.

Impressed by the depths of Hainan culture, Katja, director of the Helsinki International Culture Center, expected both parties to have more cultural and educational exchanges.

The promotion was hosted by the Publicity Department of Hainan Provincial Committee, and will go on to Oslo and Moscow after Helsinki.
