The city of Haikou in Hainan province continued to have the cleanest air of the nation's major cities in July, according to data recently released by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.

Among 169 major cities, Haikou, Zhuhai and Huangshan took the top three positions, followed by Shenzhen, Zhongshan, Zhoushan, Lhasa, Lishui, Ya'an and Qingdao.

Haikou plans to maintain its good air quality by strict control over flying dust and mobile pollution sources and vigorous promotion of green power.

Last month, 338 cities nationwide enjoyed good air quality 87.7 percent of the time, up by 5.1 percentage points from the same period last year as the government intensified efforts to crack down on polluters.
