The Hainan Qiongzhong Pumped-storage Power Station, the first of its kind in Hainan province, went into full production on July 29 after the last machine was put into commercial operation.

The power plant was constructed and invested by China Southern Power Grid with about 3.39 billion yuan ($497 million). Located upstream of the confluence of the Nanyuan Litian River of the Nandu River at Qiongzhong Li and Miao autonomous county, it is 106 km away from Haikou and 110 km away from Sanya in linear distance.

As an auxiliary project of the Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant, the pumped-storage power station has a total installed capacity of 600,000 kilowatts and a designed annual energy output of over one billion kilowatt hours.

According to a leader of the company's load frequency control branch, the new power station will decrease the annual average load rate of Hainan's thermal power generating unit by 10.87 percentage points and increase its annual generating time by 374 hours. It will help save 163,100 tons of standard coals annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 427,000 tons. Emissions of sulfur dioxide, dust and fossil energy will also be decreased. With obvious advantages in economy and security, the power station will facilitate grid digitalization and intelligent visualization.
