Sanya in Hainan province started using a traffic police robot on the G98 Highway on July 24 to handle illegal parking and traffic jams.

The mobile officer weighs about 20 kilograms and is the size of a suitcase. It relies on the guardrail of the highway to move at a speed between 5 km/h and 20 km/h. Police can control their mechanical colleague via a mobile phone APP or set it for completely automatic movement.

The robot is able to move continuously for about eight hours after full charging. If the electric level becomes less than 30 percent, the robot returns automatically for a recharging.

With an automatic-capture camera, GPS, and a 360 degree monitoring system, the robot will intensify the crackdown on emergency lane occupancy, speeding, drivers' making phone calls and unbuckled safety belts. Pictures of the traffic offenses are captured and automatically uploaded to the background system of Sanya's traffic police detachment of the public security bureau through a 4G wireless link.

Moreover, it can send voice alarms to people who come too close and to drivers who are acting illegally. It also offers voice guidance to drivers if the highway section ahead is suffering congestion, accidents, repairs or severe weather.

Sanya will now assign the robot traffic officer more widely, and expand its functions to further guarantee smooth and safe highway traffic.
