The First Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University is a Class-A tertiary comprehensive hospital committed to delivering state-of-the-art clinical care, innovative scientific research and advanced medical education. It gained the 19th place in South China and 2nd in Hainan province in the "2016 China's Hospital Rankings" published by the Hospital Management Institute and Fudan University. 

The hospital was founded in 1973 and covers an area of 90 mu (6 hectares). Of its 2,377 employees 2,071 are professional and technical personnel, 427 have vice-high-level titles and above and 328 have master's degrees or doctorates.

The hospital has 57 business departments, 25 administrative departments, 17 teaching and research offices, and five research institutions. It has four national key clinical specialties which are emergency medicine, oncology, traditional Chinese medicine for liver and gall diseases, and acupuncture.  

It also offers 13 provincial key subjects and specialties, four provincial medical centers, three provincial key laboratories, two municipal key laboratories, one medical postdoctoral research workstation that can recruit students independently and one academician workstation approved by the provincial government.
