Hainan Green Areca Nut Technology Development Co, Ltd has successfully achieved a major innovation, by adding powders extracted from areca nuts into gum.

This is not the first product that the company has successfully done this to, after several foods have also had the powder extracted from areca nuts into them. Besides foods, the company has developed various kinds of products using areca nuts, including wine, coffee and toothpaste. The products have come into the market successively as cooperation deals have been reached with a dozen of internationally renowned companies such as RedBull Group, Kweichow Moutai Co, Ltd, and Neptunus Pharm.

Located at the Taling Industrial Park in Ding'an county, the company had undertaken research for eight years to extract the essence from areca nuts utilizing modern biotechnologies before achieving the innovation. The extract is abundant in chemical compounds such as polyphenol, polysaccharose and amino acid, and totally preserves the nutritive values and functional compositions of the products.

The company has contributed to the environmentally-friendly processing of the industry. As a traditional industry of Ding'an county, areca nuts used to be smoked by stoves, which not only pollutes the environment, but also has a low production capacity. Hainan Green Areca Nut Technology Development Co applies fully automatic production lines to complete processes of cleaning, squeezing, filtrating, purifying, concentrating and drying. The only waste during the production is the residue of areca nuts, which will be made into biomass particle fuel to realize zero-trash discharge, according to the company's vice president Yan Hongxia.

The company also transformed local preliminary processing modes and produced mature products able to be sold directly on the market. At present, it has completed pilot production. The areca nut extract production amount is estimated to reach 150 tons annually, generating the revenue of around 300 million yuan ($46.93 million) when in complete operation. The company will sign acquisition agreements with local farmer households to purchase 30 tons of areca nuts or 10 tons of dried areca nuts daily, which will increase incomes of local farmers and promote the establishment of a high standard areca nut planting base.

Areca nut is a monopolistic tropical crop in Hainan accounting for 95 percent of the output nationwide. It has multiple nutritive elements and beneficial substances that humans need as part of a balanced diet. As an important traditional Chinese medicinal material, areca nut is included in around 255 kinds of drugs. It is also a chew food popular in Hainan, Hunan and Taiwan. With a high economic value and big market potential, the plant will have richer highly processed products and better prospects.
