A media group comprised of journalists from around the country recently visited Hainan villages full of overseas Chinese mainly in Wenchang, Qionghai and Wanning to learn about the province's great changes in the 30 years since its establishment.

East Hainan is famous for its assembling of a large number of overseas Chinese talents. It is also noted for its resources of ecology, culture and tourism.

Improved education

Many parents in Wanning used to send their children to study in Haikou due to weak local educational resources. According to Zhang Donghai, headmaster of Wanning Affiliated High School of Beijing Normal University, the school has adopted new patterns and introduced superior educational resources including excellent teachers.

About 5,000 students returned from Haikou to study in their hometown within two years thanks to local schools' scientific arrangements of courses and outstanding performances in senior high and college entrance examinations, as well as Wanning's unprecedented reform in basic education.

Characteristic tourism

Haosheng village, 7.2 km away from the Wenchang Space Launch Center, has combined space elements to its tourism development, which has led to a year-on-year increase of 52 percent in local farmers' annual income. It is now building 12 farms with a space theme to help people achieve prosperity through vegetable planting and the internet, added to nearby space attractions and the presence of many overseas Chinese.

Qionghai has benefitted a batch of villages including Beireng, Shamei and Nanqiang through a new urbanization principle. In 2017, Nanqiang village started to promote beautiful countryside construction with Dalupo village and was oriented to become a cultural village. By developing rural tourism and improving supporting facilities, the village's per capita disposable income reached 19,100 yuan ($3,037.77) last year.

Promising high-end healthcare

The Hainan Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone was founded in 2013. It is the first state-level development zone focusing on international medical tourism service, low-carbon ecological communities and meetings of international organizations.

Due to He Qiongmei, Qionghai municipal Party secretary, the pilot zone has attracted tens of world-advanced medical institutions. The Boao Super Hospital will soon open and a specific vaccine against cervical cancer will be made available.

Charming highway scenery

The 35-kilometer seaside sightseeing highway in Wanning is part of Hainan Roundabout Tourism Highway which will connect 50 scenic spots and 50 rest stops after completion. Many travelers choose to stop here to appreciate the magnificent scenery of sea and mountains, especially in sections of Shimei and Nanyan bays.

Space industry with bright future

The Hainan Wenchang Space Launch Center is China's fourth launch facility. Wenchang Mayor Wang Xiaoqiao said that the city is developing six aerospace industrial chains and that the province-focused Wenchang Aerospace Science and Technology City has completed preliminary planning.

The amount of investment and business orders of the Wenchang Aerospace Science and Technology City in the next five years is expected to reach 100 billion yuan ($15.9 billion). Some pillar projects such as a national space supercomputing center, a space trade expo center and a space finance center are in preparation. Wang expects Wenchang to contribute to the Belt and Road Initiative by combining resources of overseas Chinese with aerospace.
