People's voices need to be heard: Governor

Updated: 2018-01-31

The government should keep its door open to opinions and suggestions from the people at all times, said Shen Xiaoming, governor of Hainan province on Jan 28, 2018.

Shen noted that people's feedback will help to make the government's policies and measures more practical and feasible.

The remarks were made during Shen's discussion with deputies at the first plenary meeting of the 6th Hainan Provincial People's Congress, which was scheduled from Jan 26 to 31.

"To do a good job, the government should listen attentively to the voices from all sectors of society, especially the voices of grass-root level officials and ordinary people. In this way, the policies and measures will better meet the demands of reality and fulfill the expectations of the people," Shen said.

More than ten deputies from Baisha and Qiongzhong spoke during the discussion, which was focused on the provincial government's work report.

The deputies agreed that during the past five years the provincial People's Congress adhered to the decisions and arrangements of the central and provincial governments. The congress has strengthened its legislation and law enforcement work and protected the interests of the people.

The deputies also made suggestions about governmental work in minority ethnic autonomous areas and in special economic zone.

The discussions covered environmental protection, development of the central region, rural livelihoods and poverty alleviation.

Shen expressed appreciation for the suggestions and welcomed more feedback about the government's work in the future.
