The Hainan Provincial Health Commission and the Hainan Provincial Department of Education jointly released an implementation plan on Feb 23, announcing that Hainan plans to provide free human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines to 71,000 people in 2022.

According to the plan, the project is being implemented in 18 cities and counties in Hainan province. This project uses the domestic bivalent HPV vaccine, which will be uniformly procured by cities and counties' related departments.

Recipients who receive the first dose should be between 13 to 14 and a half years old. Recipients who have contraindications to vaccines or who have been previously vaccinated with an HPV vaccine are not eligible for the program. The second dose should be administered six months after the first dose, and administrators should ensure that the two vaccination doses are completed before the recipients turn 15.

This project requires that each vaccine dose given to a recipient should be produced by the same manufacturer. It is not recommended to use other HPV vaccines after the whole vaccination process is completed. If the recipient needs to be vaccinated with other vaccines at a similar time, it should be ensured that the interval between the HPV vaccination and other vaccinations are administered should be more than 14 days, with the national immunization plan vaccines and the COVID-19 vaccine given priority.
